How to Mix and Match Throw Pillows

Hey everyone! My name is Kirsten Grove, and I am a interior stylist and blogger from Boise, Idaho. I’ve been obsessed with design my entire life. My goal is to make designing a little bit easier for everyone!

When I think about a cozy living space, I think warm textures, nut-scented candles burning and beautiful throw pillows filling the sofa. Throw pillows are an easy way to add color and texture to your living room. With so many choices of how to display them, it can feel overwhelming, but it’s not—I promise. I love mixing different styles of pillows to create a fun, relaxed look. The key is using similar hues without going overboard on colors. Read on for my tips and tricks on how create the perfect pillow display on your sofa!

It’s best to start with at least two neutral pillows. I love to play with these solid velvet pillow covers from The Company Store®. The velvet fabric complements most other textures, while still feeling bold. I normally split these base pillows up and display them on either end of the sofa.

Next, I like to add one really textured pillow that is still a bit neutral, but stands out a bit. Placing it in front of one of the velvet pillows add a graphic punch to the look. This woven stripe pillow cover looks great on its own, but can also be paired with many other colors and textures.

With three neutral options, I love to add a pop of color. Right now this red wine color is all the rage! The embroidery adds a striking mix of color and pattern, and I’m all about that.

For the final touches I chose pillows that are both casual and fun. I added a textured stonewash pillow cover in a rectangular size to offset all of the square options. And for the icing on the cake, I added this stunning embroidered pom pom pillow cover. It proves that you can mix a plethora of styles to create magic!
